Wachale Cineteca

An Anti-colonial Film Club

About Us

Wachale Cineteca is a film club that meets monthly in Northeast L.A. We watch films and experimental videos that help us understand colonialism. By seeing it through the medium of cinema, we are better able to see how it exists in our everyday lives. When we understand colonialism, we are more prepared to reject it—to liberate ourselves and our communities from it.

Watch and Talk Format

Before the films start, we dedicate time for an introduction and highlight some relevant themes. After the movies, we open up for conversation. We can talk about important takeaways from the films, geek out about cinematic form, and bring up anything we didn’t like. We will program approximately 2 hours of movies and 30 mins for introduction and talkback. Any exceptions will be announced ahead of time. Additionally, we open up an online forum to continue the conversation after each screening.

When We Meet

Members of the cineteca will usually meet on the fourth Saturday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. Refer to our screenings calendar for exact details.

Kids

Most films are adult-focused, but young children are welcome if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. We will note movie ratings for films if they have been rated, but not all films are rated by the MPAA. In those instances, they will be marked NR (not rated). Movie trailers will be provided in advance, we encourage parents to view them in advance.

membership is free

Wachale Cineteca does not charge for access to screenings. There is an optional suggested $5 donation to the venue at each screening. Guests will not be turned away for lack of funds. Venue address and details are provided after you rsvp for a screening.
